A Smithsonian exhibit celebrating sports is coming to Perryville! Mark your calendars! You won’t want to miss “Hometown Teams”.
The Perry County Historical Society is very excited to announce that they will be hosting a traveling exhibit from the Smithsonian Institute at the Perryville Higher Education Center from April 14th-May 20th.
The exhibit is called Hometown Teams and it explores how sports affect communities all over the country. In addition, they will have their own exhibit on Perry County sports to supplement this exhibit. To give you a sneak peak, each Friday the Perry County Historical Society will feature few of the items donated by local museums, schools and families on their Facebook page. You can get to the page by clicking HERE.
The first featured Friday post was the WINKLER BASEBALL TEAM (1955) from Apple Creek, Missouri. Photos will be display, along with two newspaper articles, titled: “Nine Brothers To Oppose Club from Longtown” and “Nine Brothers”
This is a partnership between the Perry County Historical Society, Missouri Humanities Council, and the Smithsonian’s Museums on Main Street project.
They will also be hosting a “Day at the Ball Game” on May 5th. They will be hosting two vintage baseball teams, the St. Louis Brown Stockings and the Murphysboro Clarkes, who will play baseball like they did in the early 1900s.
They are the first of six locations in Missouri to host this exhibit, the only one in our area, and are very excited to bring this to Perry County! If you would like to learn more, please do not hesitate to contact Perry County Historical Society.
